so i can buy 4 more cameras to add to the 4 that come with this dvr?

yes, it has (8) camera channels, but only comes with (4) cameras.

I have 4 camera and a 4 prong splitter with a power cord but the 4 cameras would have to be 12" apart with this short splitter. Whats wrong.

You should have 4 long cables, like 50 feet each, with power and video plugs on each end of the cable. One power and video of the long cable connects to the camera and the other end connects to your power splitter and to your video input on your DVR.

I asked if the hard drive was included as described and received multiple answers saying both yes and no. What is going on here?

There are some multi-attribute listings where the item with hard drive or without hard drive is shown.Pls do not worry. Your $159.99 item you referred to includes the 1 tb hard drive.
