Can I use this system on hardened steel blades?

Absolutely,the blade i sharpened was made of cpm s90v steel (60-62 rockwell hardness).the sharpening stones in this kit will sharpen any steel in existence.

Can this system handle small blades like a Leatherman?

See my review for more info but I believe the latest 2015 version with rubber inserts gripping the knife has problems with small knives. Any downward force such as is required with the courser stones to remove metal and the knife deflects so that consistent angle sharpening is not easy.

How does this perform on blades with a recurve?

This kit comes with flat stones. These work fine on convex curved blades e.g. the curve at the end of a 'clip point'.  There are curved stones available for concave blades such as the inside curve of a khukri. And there are also stones for serrated blades too. I've only used the flat stones and I've achieved an edge that you can shave with. I'm going to get some curved stones next because I'm really pleased with the results I've got so-far. How long do the whetstones last?

I've had mine for over a year and sharpened my kitchen knives dozens of times, and mine are still as good as new - I can see no sign of dishing in the whetstones at all. I imagine that it'll happen over time, but since the entirety of the width of the stone is used on each stroke the dishing will only occur in one axis, and it'll take a long time to reach the point where it dramatically effects the angle the jig sharpens at.The stones are not likely to wear away very quickly, but rather they're more likely to get clogged with metal swarf from the knives you sharpen. A good trick to remove the swarf to avoid clogging and preserve the life of the stones is to add a couple more drops of the provided oil in order to float the swarf out of the stone, and then pass a decently-strong magnet wrapped in clingfilm over the top. The magnet will lift the oily metal out of the stone, and then you can peel the clingfilm off keeping the metal inside it, so the magnet stays perfectly clean and can be used again next time. Don't let the stone get too clogged - make sure you clean in between each side of the knife on each grade of stone.
