I think it's worth buying a good make of screw. These are excellent and worth the price.

Excellent screws at a good price
These work perfectly - i.e no pre-drilling needed. And far cheaper than a well-known supplier of screws!

Early days
I have only used a few of these so far and have found they do go in easily, however the claim that no countersinking is necessary appears to be a bit over optimistic. The reason I say this is that when the screw is put in flush the wood which was 19mm thick split along the grain, this was disappointing. I will see how I get on with the rest before buying any other sizes of this brand.

These are excellent screws, not unlike turbogolds. I still find a pilot hole necessary but they are well machined and I am very happy with them.
