The suitability of shelving material depends upon several things, including the weight it has to carry and how it is supported, however I would not normally consider a material less than 15mm thick as it is likely to bend under weight.As well as being only 12mm thick, the board you have selected is only 30cm wide and not 40cm which you say you are looking for!Unless these shelves are going to be outside or in a wet environment, the use of marine plywood would  be very extravagant and internal plywood is much cheaper even if you were to use 15mm or 18mm thick. An even cheaper option is to use MDF at 15mm or 18mm thick which can also be supplied with a melamine finish in various in colours and patterns.
